Mechanical Engineer / Mechanical Engineering Technician HF – Scientific Instrumentation

Workload: 80–100%

Start date: By agreement

Location: Zurich

At condenZero, we develop and build cryogenic systems for electron microscopy. Our instruments enable researchers worldwide to investigate materials at temperatures close to absolute zero and reveal new physical phenomena.

As a spin-off of the University of Zurich, we combine scientific research with advanced instrument engineering. To further develop our products, we are looking for a technically versatile person who enjoys mechanical design, hands-on work, and taking responsibility.

Your responsibilities

  • Develop and design mechanical components and assemblies.
  • Take developments from the initial concept through CAD design and prototyping to a tested product.
  • Prepare manufacturing drawings, bills of materials, and technical documentation.
  • Evaluate materials, manufacturing processes, and purchased components, and liaise with suppliers.
  • Assemble and test prototypes, and improve existing designs in terms of functionality, reliability, and manufacturability.
  • Work closely with our development and production team at the intersection of mechanical engineering, cryogenics, vacuum technology, and electrical measurement technology.

Your profile

  • A degree in mechanical engineering from an ETH or university of applied sciences (FH), a Swiss higher vocational diploma in mechanical engineering (Techniker HF), or an equivalent qualification.
  • Sound knowledge of mechanical design and proficiency in a 3D CAD system (SolidWorks).
  • A good understanding of technical drawings, tolerances, materials, and manufacturing processes.
  • An enthusiasm for hands‑on work: you consider building, assembly, and troubleshooting just as much a part of development as working at a computer.
  • An independent and meticulous approach to work.
  • Confident communication in German and English.

Experience in precision mechanics, scientific instrumentation, optics, vacuum technology, or cryogenics is an advantage. What matters most is your technical understanding, willingness to learn, and enjoyment of making sophisticated instruments work as part of our team.

What you can expect

  • Technically challenging development projects with direct applications in leading international research.
  • Design freedom and responsibility for your own components and assemblies.
  • A small, interdisciplinary team with short decision‑making paths.
  • The opportunity to follow your developments from design through to use at the customer’s site.
  • A working environment that values scientific understanding and practical skills equally.
